Quarterly Retail E-Commerce Sales Report
Notice of Revision: Quarterly retail e-commerce estimates were revised to reflect historical corrections and the restated results of the 2022 Annual Retail Trade Survey. Estimates were restated to incorporate the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) changes. In addition to the 2017 NAICS changes, the restated data represent employer-only firms to be aligned with the Annual Integrated Economic Survey (AIES) and the Economic Census. The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the first quarter of 2025, adjusted for seasonal variation, but not for price changes, was $300.2 billion, virtually unchanged (±0.7%)* from the fourth quarter of 2024. Total retail sales for the first quarter of 2025 were estimated at $1,858.5 billion, an increase of 0.4 percent (±0.2%) from the fourth quarter of 2024. The first quarter 2025 e-commerce estimate increased 6.1 percent (±0.9%) from the first quarter of 2024 while total retail sales increased 4.5 percent (±0.4%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the first quarter of 2025 accounted for 16.2 percent of total sales.
On a not adjusted basis, the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the first quarter of 2025 totaled $275.8 billion, a decrease of 20.3 percent (±0.7%) from the fourth quarter of 2024. The first quarter 2025 e-commerce estimate increased 5.6 percent (±0.9%) from the first quarter of 2024 while total retail sales increased 3.2 percent (±0.4%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the first quarter of 2025 accounted for 15.9 percent of total sales.
